Whenever I'd visit him we would sing all the time. He was always interested in teaching me how to sing. Some of the songs I remember singing with him were "We'll Sing in the Sunshine", "Brand New Key" and "Ride a Little Horsey". I'd even try to help him write songs. He remarried Doris, who was much younger than him. Doris didn't care for us kids much, I don't think. I always felt in competition with her for his attention. After a while, he moved to Hendersonville (just outside of Nashville), TN, and we would go for years without seeing or hearing from him. I guess he thought we were better off without him. When I was in college I decided to visit my dad one summer. He was in very poor health and was depressed about his life and career. I wanted to get to know him better and maybe help him get back on his feet.
